“50 Shades of Grey” is now coming to the big screen in time for Valentine’s Day, but many people are not enthusiastic. The steamy novels by E.L. James have become worldwide and notorious for their explicit material, but many people are pre-emptively boycotting the film adaptation. Critics claim “50 Shades of Grey” glamorizes a relationship that would normally be considered unhealthy, as well as abusive behaviors and violence.
Protesting against this film, many people have been using the hashtag #50DollarsNot50Shades. This social media campaign suggests that instead of spending approximately fifty dollars on two movie tickets, popcorn, etc., donating fifty dollars to local domestic abuse shelters is money better spent. According to the organization running this campaign, “Hollywood doesn’t need your money; abused women do.”
Regardless, the movie is expected to be a huge hit at the box office when it is released to the general public on February 14.
